Bankers Hill, sometimes referred to as ‘Park West’, is a historic San Diego neighborhood that is bordered to the north by Hillcrest (at Upas Street), at Date Street by Downtown (at Interstate 5), to the east by Balboa Park, and the west by Interstate 5, Little Italy and the neighborhood known as Midtown.
Literally up the hill from downtown’s historic Gaslamp District, “Bankers Hill” was named because of its land elevation and reputation as a home for the affluent. This neighborhood is also rich in architecture with many homes dating back to the late 19th century and presently boasts restored and preserved Victorian mansions, courtyard apartments, and a recent influx of luxury condominiums and high-rises on 6th Avenue with views of Balboa Park and/or the ocean and downtown skylines. While some of the older Victorian mansions remain residences others have been restored into live and/or work spaces for residents and local businesses. Residents of Bankers Hill are a mix of young professionals, retirees and those who enjoy the urban pedestrian life.
Although Bankers Hill is a short car ride or brisk walk to surrounding areas such as Hill Crest, Little Italy and downtown’s Historic Gaslamp there is also an abundance of things to see and do within this urban neighborhood that are just a short walk away; below are some of our favorite points of interest.
Balboa Park: numerous museums, restaurants, theatres, performing arts, rides, the San Diego Zoo, gardens, sporting activities, outdoor recreation, a dog park and numerous festivals and celebrations all happen within San Diego’s jewel, Balboa Park….which is walking distance or a bike ride away for Bankers Hill residents.
Spruce Street Suspension Bridge: Tucked in a quiet residential stretch, this historic (and somewhat wobbly) bridge lies above Maple Canyon Trail and adds a bit of adventure to your neighborhood stroll.
Restaurants range from fine dining and urban to deli or mom-and-pop restaurant. Popular restaurants in the area include but are not limited to: Bertrand at Mr. A’s (known for its spectacular views and fine dining), Bankers Hill Bar & Restaurant and Barrio Star. As noted there are numerous delis and small neighborhood restaurants available as well as coffee shops, sushi bars and dessert bars. The area has convenient access to both I-5 and SR-163. Shopping is available in Hillcrest and Mission Valley as well as Horton Plaza which is located in downtown’s historic Gaslamp District making Bankers Hill a short drive or brisk walk to all surrounding attractions.
