5 Things to Prepare for an International Move: Packing, Self Storage, and More

From packing to finding self storage, here are some essential tips for moving internationally

Moving domestically is hard enough and moving internationally is a completely different kind of beast. Aside from the large physical distance, you must travel and any self storage needs, moving to a new country has a lot of requirements that moving domestically does not. Here are 5 things you need to do before moving internationally.

1. Apply/Renew Your Passport
It should go without saying that the very first thing you need to do is apply for or renew your passport. You cannot travel outside the country without a passport so it’s a necessary step to moving internationally. Passports normally take a few months to procure so make sure you do this step very early.

2. Apply for a visa
Along with a passport, you will also need to apply with the government of the country you are moving to for a Visa. Different countries have different application requirements depending on what kind of visa you are looking for. Generally, you must have a visa if you are a non-citizen working or studying in a foreign country.

3. Learn the culture
It should also go without saying that you need to educate yourself on the local culture of where you are moving. Take some time to research traditions or learn the local language if necessary.

4. Shipping or self storage?
You also need to figure out if you are going to ship your belongings or keep them at home in a self storage unit. If you are permanently moving to a new country, you probably want to ship your items. If you are moving temporarily for work or school, then your best bet might be to get self storage for your possessions that you don’t want to ship.

5. Figure out health care
You also need to figure out if your current health care provider will cover you while you are abroad and if your prescription meds are allowed in the country you are moving to. The local US embassy should have a list of medical resources for US citizens in foreign countries.
