The small southeast San Diego neighborhood of Encanto has the most affordable houses in San Diego and the lowest average rent in the city. Encanto doesn’t have the best reputation due to a higher-than-average violent crime rate and gang activity. However, most people feel safe living in Encanto as most violent crime is avoidable and concentrated in a portion of the neighborhood and surrounding areas in Skyline. The neighborhood is undergoing improvements that are helping it shed its reputation including community gardens. It’s served by Morse High School and Encanto Elementary School.
