History of the Rancho Santa Fe Community in San Diego County
Rancho Santa Fe is a historic planned community in San Diego County with a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. Originally part of a Mexican land grant, the area was home to Juan Maria Osuna, San Diego’s first alcalde (mayor), before becoming a major development project in the 1920s.
The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway played a crucial role in Rancho Santa Fe’s origins. The railway purchased the land to harvest eucalyptus trees for railroad ties, but the wood proved unsuitable to hold railroad spikes. This led the company to repurpose the land into an exclusive residential community.
In 1928, the Rancho Santa Fe Association and Art Jury were formed with the recording of the Rancho Santa Fe Covenant to oversee the community’s development and maintain its unique character.
