 Clairemont (also known as Clairemont San Diego or Clairemont Mesa San Diego) is in northern San Diego, so it’s a quieter and more tranquil community than other prominent San Diego neighborhoods. It’s a residential neighborhood with great schools like Whitman Elementary School.

Downtown San Diego is a vibrant cultural hub with a lively dining scene, top-performing arts venues, and family-friendly museums. Downtown San Diego contains a few major subneighborhoods, giving you more options for things to do. Little Italy is a walkable community with trattorias, while Marina offers waterfront stores and restaurants.

According to the US Census, the San Diego median household income is $104,321. Some neighborhoods have median incomes of over $125,000, including Carmel Valley and Miramar Ranch North. On the other hand, neighborhoods like Colina del Sol and Mountain View of median incomes of less than $50,000. According to Fox 5 San Diego, 25% of San Diego families made over $200,000 a year in 2023, up by six percentage points since 2021. 

49.9% of San Diego residents have attained a bachelor’s degree or higher. 11.3% of residents have a master’s degree, and 3.0% of residents have a doctorate. San Diego Unified School District has 176 schools and serves over 95,000 students. San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) is one of the top urban school districts in the country. According to SDUSD, the district has improved its standardized test scores between 2022 and 2024, making greater gains than the state of California. Notable public schools in San Diego include:

Scripps Elementary School: Scripps Elementary School is a STEAM school with a focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The school also has a world-class art program, with teaching artists visiting art classes to teach students how to paint, draw, and build sculptures. 

Pacific Beach Middle School: Pacific Beach Middle School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) school. Students take classes with a focus on world affairs and world languages, with options for Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.

Mt. Everest Academy: Mt. Everest Academy is a K-12 public school under the purview of the San Diego Unified School District. It offers a hybrid learning environment with at-home and in-class student learning, with students turning in work at the end of each month. 

Canyon Crest Academy: US News ranks Canyon Crest Academy as the best high school in San Diego. The academy is home to 26 sports teams, over 185 student clubs, and seven different career technical pathways, including courses in business management and film production.

Pacific Ridge School: Located in Carlsbad, Pacific Ridge School is a 6-12 college preparatory and secular private school. Pacific Ridge offers an education rooted in ethical responsibility and global engagement, with students able to go on yearly travel courses and perform community service projects.

San Diego Jewish Academy: San Diego Jewish Academy is located in San Diego and is the largest private school for Jewish students in San Diego. Students as young as 18 months can learn Hebrew and Torah studies alongside a catalog of mathematics, arts, sciences, and American and global history classes.

The Bishop’s School: The Bishop’s School is located in La Jolla and is a 6-12 school affiliated with the Episcopal Church. Bishop’s has its own center for creative sciences, with students submitting hands-on learning projects for faculty approval and school credits. Bishop’s has a comprehensive catalog of electives, including speech and debate, costume design, and functional training.

Marantha Christian Schools: Marantha Christian Schools is a PreK-12 coeducational Christian school. It is not affiliated with any church, so Christians of all denominations are welcome. Students attend chapel once a week and go on field trips throughout the country, with Christian lessons integrated into each trip.

University of California San Diego: UC San Diego is one of the top public universities in America. It offers over 200 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including top programs in cognitive science, computer science, and international studies.

University of San Diego: The University of San Diego is a private Catholic college with 89 undergraduate and graduate programs. The core curriculum requires students to take a wide variety of courses, creating a liberal arts education with history, writing, arts, and religion classes.

San Diego Mesa College: San Diego Mesa College is one of the largest community colleges in California, offering nearly 200 different associate degree and certificate programs. The college is home to a dozen athletic teams and courses in health information management, philosophy, and other unique programs.

California Institute of Applied Technology: Located in National City, the California Institute of Applied Technology (CIAT) is one of the top technical schools in the San Diego area. CIAT offers programs in software development, HR management, computer information systems, and other information technology sectors.

San Diego Metropolitan Transit System: The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (SDMTS) is the main San Diego public transportation system. It offers four light rail lines and over 90 bus routes with stops all over San Diego. 

COASTER Commuter Rail Service: The COASTER Commuter Rail Service provides commuter rail services from San Diego to Oceanside, Carlsbad, and other cities near San Diego. San Diego does not have a bike share program, though you can rent bikes at a few shops throughout the city. 

Greyhound: San Diego has six Greyhound bus stops with dozens of daily routes. 30 cities are directly reachable from San Diego Greyhound stops, and you can take connecting bus routes to other major destinations. 

San Diego International Airport: San Diego International Airport is the top airport in the San Diego area. The airport is just three miles northwest of Downtown San Diego and is a hub for Alaska Airlines. You can take flights to nearly every major airport in America. You can access the airport through SDMTS or by car, taxi, and ride-sharing services.

Ride-Sharing Services: Uber, Lyft, Opoli, Wingz, and other ride-sharing services are available throughout San Diego, including to and from San Diego International Airport. You can use any of these ride-sharing services to cities near San Diego.

Interstate 5: Interstate 5 (I-5) runs north and south through California, connecting San Diego to nearly the entire state. Interstate 5 also continues through Oregon and Washington to the US-Canadian border. I-5 is one of the most common routes for commuters in Southern California and is essential for traveling across the entire state.

Interstate 8: Interstate 8 runs east to west between San Diego and Casa Grande, Arizona. The interstate is a major road for commuting to eastern San Diego suburbs, including La Mesa, Spring Valley, and El Cajon.

State Route 56: State Route 56 (SR 56, also known as the Ted Williams Freeway) is an east-west highway that connects Interstate 5 to Interstate 15. It runs through northern San Diego neighborhoods like Torrey Highlands and Palacio Del Mar, serving as an important route for residential homeowners who work in Downtown San Diego. 

State Route 94: State Route 94 (SR 94) runs from Downtown San Diego to the east. It provides access to eastern San Diego neighborhoods and cities like Jamul and Dulzura. 

State Route 163: State Route 163 (SR 163, also known as the Cabrillo Freeway) runs north from Downtown San Diego to Escondido. It’s another major road for commuters with jobs in Downtown and Northern San Diego, providing convenient access to many northern San Diego neighborhoods like Kearny Mesa.

The San Diego Zoo is one of the top zoos in the United States. The zoo covers 100 acres and is home to over 650 species of animals, including giant pandas, African bush elephants, and Malayan tigers. You and your kids can enjoy unique experiences like guided tours and walking tours through the panda habitat.

Balboa Park is a 1,200-acre park home to museums, walking trails, historic sites, and other attractions. You can visit the San Diego Air and Space Museum, the San Diego Natural History Museum, the Japanese Botanical Garden, and the Morley Field Sports Complex.

The USS Midway was America’s longest-serving aircraft carrier, serving the entire length of the Cold War. It’s now a museum open to the public and is currently the largest museum in America dedicated to naval aviation and aircraft carriers. You and your family can examine over 30 restored aircraft and over 10 acres of exhibits, learning the stories of the men and women who served on the Midway. 

SeaWorld San Diego is a theme park and public aquarium covering 189 acres. You and your kids can go on roller coasters and water rides, view whale and dolphin shows, and visit touch pools with bamboo sharks and cleaner fishes.

Cabrillo National Monument is an outdoor park with historic points of interest, beaches, and incredible views of San Diego Bay. You can visit the Old Point Loma Lighthouse and go for walks on three nature trails with views of tidepools, hills, and beaches.

Petco Park is home to the San Diego Padres, and you can attend baseball games during the spring, summer, and early fall. Petco Park is also a top park for concerts and sporting events, including rugby, college football, and golf.
